This is a talk about scaling engineering culture, disguised as a talk about sustainable on-call rotations in the age of microservices. It is a first-hand account of Duolingo’s journey to an on-call ecosystem that included every single one of their 80+ engineers and tells the story of developing an “on-call pain balancer.” Antonia Scheidel will share some of the tools and processes that have helped Duolingo reduce the burden of being on-call, and how setting out to standardize a single aspect of engineering life opened the door to learnings beyond simply improving site reliability.
