This course is suitable for Managers, Team Leads and Responders.
Suggested prerequisite: Incident Command System 101
Learning from incidents requires getting to the truth of what happened in a moment of crisis. A successful postmortem process is based on a culture of honesty, learning and accountability. Practicing blameless postmortems can have widespread benefits that include improving technical processes and peer-to-peer culture. But the culture change required to adopt blamelessness and adopt a system of continuous learning can be incredibly challenging. This workshop draws from our open-source postmortem framework to teach you strategies for conducting successful blameless postmortems. The workshop introduces basic concepts useful when following our step-by-step guide, but focuses on practice exercises to help you develop strategies for overcoming common pitfalls.
After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Assign roles and responsibilities needed in completing a postmortem review
- Recognize and reduce biases and patterns that make a working culture susceptible to blame
- Understand how to enact a formalized postmortem process at your organization, along with associated best practices
